Woking Borough Council

Autumn 2009

First word

So here we are, the end of another summer. But before we look ahead at what's to come, please indulge me with a moment of reflection.

In some ways it's been an exceptional summer - a scorching hot Wimbledon with a Brit in the semi-finals, a very wet July and Swine Flu dominating the headlines. Here in Woking, thousands of people turned out to watch the Tour Series, almost a quarter of a million people tuned in to watch the race on national TV and hundreds of people dusted off their bikes and remembered the joys of pedal power.

The summer months also saw the Army move in to new premises opposite Woking train station, members of the Woking Magazine team go out and about in Pyrford and new man on the football scene, Shahid Azeem, settle in to his new role as `Designate Chairman' at Woking FC. It's certainly been an eventful summer and, as this issue testifies, autumn is likely to follow in a similar vein.

Woking Borough residents are asked to take a few moments to digest the article which reinforces some key information about changes to the waste and recycling service which will be kicking off this month (September). It's all part of the ambition to reach a 60% recycling rate - we're already well on the way to this and these additional measures will help to divert even more waste from landfill.

Environmental considerations are also at the heart of the EcoCentrium article on which documents one man's efforts to change the carbon footprint of the town centre `cruise liner', the Centrium - it makes very interesting reading.

Just because the nights are drawing in doesn't mean you can't get out and about and have some fun. Between the Woking Beer Festival, Oktoberfest at Mizen's Railway and the One World celebrations, you're bound to find something to interest you but, if you do fancy something else, check out the What's on pages.

And while your out and about in the Borough, keep your eyes peeled for the Council's specially illuminated roadshow vehicle which will be `lighting up the night' to impart important messages about night-time safety in Woking.

Take care this autumn.
