The British Science Festival (BSF)
The British Science Festival, Europe's foremost celebration of science, engineering and technology, is coming to Surrey from 5-10 September 2009.
Hundreds of events, many of them free, will take place at various venues across the county, including the University of Surrey campus, theatres, galleries, museums and libraries and more. The jam-packed programme offers something for everyone. From workshops, to celebrity talks and discussions, to performances, hands-on activities and excursions, you are sure to find something you like.
Key festival features include events which link to:
-
the national Darwin200 anniversary marking 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin. We'll be exploring his scientific ideas and their impacts on us all
-
the International Year of Astronomy 2009. Expect us to be reaching for the stars with an exciting and inspiring programme for families, adults and school children
-
a family `hands-on' science event over the weekend of 5/6 September
-
plus a Big Science Read event at selected Surrey libraries in the run up to the Festival.
Find science in places where you least expect it! Discover a different view on the economic crisis, learn about the latest in gaming technology and take part in sometimes heated discussions on topics such as health, food, and culture. You'll also have the chance to meet and question some of the UK's top scientists.
The British Science Festival is organised by the British Science Association, in partnership with the University of Surrey, SEEDA, Surrey County Council and Guildford Borough Council. The BSF in Woking
As part of the British Science Festival, Woking is organising two special events:
Showcasing environmental science
A shop unit in the Peacocks Centre will be transformed into an environmental showcase where the Council and its partners will demonstrate the science behind the Borough's most successful sustainability initiatives. The key themes will be energy efficiency, renewable energy, water efficiency, sustainable waste management and green travel. Anyone can drop in to the showcase between 5-10 September.
Calling all sci-fi fans!
Watch some of the classics of the science fiction genre at diverse locations across Woking, where H.G. Wells and his 'The War of the Worlds' were based. Film screenings are planned for The Lightbox, the H.G. Wells Conference Centre and the Mayford Village Hall between Friday 4 and Monday 7 September, priced at £2 per film. To complement the films, local historian Iain Wakefield will be conducting some guided walks following in the footsteps of H.G.Wells to some of the sites he made famous in his book.
