News in brief
Dive in and enjoy a free swim
Local people aged 60 and over and 16 and under are reminded that they can now swim for free at Woking's Pool in the Park thanks to a new initiative funded by Woking Borough Council, Woking Youth Council, Runnymede Borough Council and the Government.
Linked to the national Change4Life campaign, the free swimming initiative aims to get more people enjoying active, healthy lives. Swimming is recognised as one of the most popular ways for people in the country to keep fit and, as it's low impact, it's great for people who have problems with their joints or who find exercise difficult.
Woking Borough Council is one of just five Surrey boroughs that have decided to embrace this opportunity to encourage more people in to the pool, as part of its commitment to improving the health and well-being of the local population.
Over 6,000 juniors and seniors have already signed up for free swimming. During April, these people collectively enjoyed over 10,000 junior swims and almost 2,500 senior swims - that's a lot of energy being used and plenty of calories being burnt!
To benefit from the free access to the pools, people aged 60 and over and 16 and under need to apply for a Key Card at Woking Leisure Centre, Pool in the Park or the Civic Offices. An application form can be downloaded from the Council's website www.woking.gov.uk but the completed form must be presented with proof of age at one of the Council venues listed. The Key Card is issued free of charge and gives users an opportunity to take advantage of discounts and special offers at around 30 other leisure and well-being venues in the area.
