Woking Borough Council

Winter 2008/2009

First word

Introduction

I haven't ridden a bike for a while but all the excitement around Woking's recent cycling success has got me thinking that I might be missing a trick. Cycling can save you money but help you to lose pounds and you can feel happy in the knowledge that, at the same time as breathing fresh air, you are actually helping to keep it clean.

It's a win-win situation that just requires a little bit of effort to work out how it can fit in to a hectic daily schedule. And that's exactly why transport features in the Council's Climate Change Strategy (see Features). There's plenty that both local people and businesses can do to reduce the amount of CO2 produced in the Borough and start adapting to climate change.

Also under Features, an article about flooding in the Borough offers some practical advice on what to do to prepare for periods of heavy rain - we all have our fingers crossed that it will be a crisp and bright winter but it's always best to be prepared.

Hints and tips on how to 'do the right thing' with all that Christmas waste are included in this issue along with details about when to put your bin out over the festive period. It's been a great year for recycling, with residents fully embracing the glass recycling collections so let's see if we can get 2009 off to the right start.

If you're looking for fun things to do over the Christmas period, that 'What's on' information offers a number of good ideas. Our feature on the pantomime, put together with the help of two local young reporters, is sure to get you in the seasonal spirit and the `Out and about' spread will help you to walk off your Christmas dinner!

And, if you are planning to indulge in the work Christmas party or are looking forward to a big night out, follow our guide for getting home safely and plan your taxi journey in advance (see Features).

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy 2009!
