Woking Borough Council

Winter 2011/2012

First word

Over the summer, we have been working hard to bring you a bumper edition to keep you in the know of what's going on across the Borough.

As the long winter nights approach, it's tempting to stay in the warmth. However, we look at how you can stay active this winter at Woking Leisure Centre and Pool in the Park (`Stay healthy, wealthy and wise' page). And for those of you who prefer a relaxing autumnal stroll to put some colour in your cheeks, take a look at the `Out and about' pages for an enjoyable walk around Worplesdon and Whitmoor Common.

If you'd rather donate your time to helping in the community, there are lots of opportunities for you to volunteer. We speak to Woking Association of Voluntary Service (WAVS) about the benefits of giving up your time (take a look at the `Why don't you' page).

A day of carnival celebrations kicked off the official launch of Celebrate Woking, the year long programme of multi-cultural community events where residents and visitors can get involved. To find out about just some of what's planned throughout 2012, view the `Woking kicks off a year of culture' feature.

In the spirit of festivity, winter is also a time of celebration for many and alcohol tends to play a big part. The Surrey Alcohol Responsibility Initiative (SARI) gives some helpful advice on how everyone can enjoy the celebrations whilst avoiding any regrets afterwards in our `Why let the good times go bad?' article.

And if you're looking for festive things to see and do in the run up to Christmas, click on the `What's on' pages for our guide to what's happening in the Borough.

As this is the last edition of the year, I'd like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year!
